A digital educational game that is trivia-based. The game supports multi-player engagement and enhances learning about and implementation of transdisciplinary research principles.

Impact: The game premiered October 16, 2018 at the AGE-WELL’s 4th  Annual Conference, October 18, 2018 (~400 conference registrants)  and is archived on the SAVIE website: https://www.jeuxserieux.ca/age-well/tictactdr/ (password: agewell)

2018 Feb                            “Relational caring learning series.” Co-Principal Investigators: Dupuis, S.L., McAiney, C.; Co-Investigators: Hickman, K., Jonas-Simpson, C., Kontos, P., Mitchell, G., Gray, J. (Co-Is); Partners: Extendicare Canada, the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Relational Caring Learning Series. Waterloo, ON, Canada.

The Relational Caring Learning Series is the outcome of a participatory action research project with a range of professionals working in the long-term care sector. The team worked actively together over a year and a half to explore what works and what does not work for learning in the long-term care sector, to decide on the ideal learning approach, and to develop an 8-module Learning Series focused on the principles of relational caring. Based on Dialogue Education™ and recommendations by the working group, the Series is designed to have learners actively involved in their learning, encourage reflection on practice, and open up discussion and sharing among team members and others. In each module, learners explore new ideas, apply them in their practice, come back and talk about what the experience was like, and plan next steps. Working collaboratively, the team created a Relational Caring Learning Series Facilitator Guide (106 pages), a Relational Caring Learning Series Participant Workbook (106 pages), and a compilation of Facilitator Resources needed for the Series (73 pages). The Series is currently being piloted in one retirement and three long-term care homes with plans for broad dissemination after the pilot.

Impact: Even though the Series has not been released yet, we have received requests for the Series from long-term care organisations in Canada and in the United States, and to profile the learning series as part of a case study on relationship-centred care being developed by researchers at the University of Sheffield, UK.

2017 Dec                            “Cracked: new light on dementia”. Copyright Registration #1145880. Canada. Executive Producer: Kontos, P., Co-Producers: Dupuis, S., Gray, J., Co-Creators: Mitchell, G., Jonas-Simpson, C.

A filmed version of a research-based drama featuring qualitative research with persons living with dementia, family care partners, and health care practitioners. The production challenges stigma associated with dementia, and advocates a new ethic of relational caring premised on research I have conducted with colleagues on the importance of bringing relationships to the forefront of care, supporting embodied self-expression, and the allocation of resources to mobilize socio-cultural and political structures to fully support the humanity of persons living with dementia.

Impact: The film premiered at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema on January 19, 2018 in Toronto, Ontario to coincide with the Alzheimer Society of Canada’s Alzheimer Awareness Month (600+ registered attendees). The audience at the film premiere included dignitaries, representatives from three levels of the Alzheimer Society, academics, health care practitioners, family carers of persons with dementia, and the general public.  Other film screenings include: Montreal (Concordia University), Toronto (Toronto Rehabilitation Institute-UHN), New York City (Performing the World conference). The film is also accessible at www.crackedondementia.ca.  To date, this website has received 28,924 page views since it was launched on January 19, 2018.

An arts and community-based research project involving participation by persons with dementia, family members, visual and performance artists, and researchers in a one-day workshop to explore the implications of the tragedy discourse for persons and families experiencing dementia and the creation of an alternative discourse. Working collaboratively, eight visual and poetic expressions were created that reflect what persons with dementia want the world to know about them: despite loss and sadness they embrace life, remain active and engaged, break the silence, and transform with new possibilities.

Impact: The visual and poetic expressions were chosen to be featured at an installation at LabCab, a multi-arts festival in Toronto, Canada, in July 2013. It also featured at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute-University Health Network, Innovations Gallery in 2013 and was so successful was invited back for a second showing. We were invited to showcase the art at the Knowledge Translation in Dementia Care: It Takes a Community workshop held in Toronto in May 2014 and at the 10th birthday celebration of Highview Residences in London, Ontario also in May 2014. A story on the art appeared in the Kitchener Record in Fall 2013.

A research-based drama featuring qualitative research with persons living with dementia, family care partners, and health care practitioners. Cracked challenges stigma associated with dementia, and advocates a new ethic of relational caring premised on research I have conducted with colleagues on the importance of bringing relationships to the forefront of care, supporting embodied self-expression, and the allocation of resources to mobilize socio-cultural and political structures to fully support the humanity of persons living with dementia. For a trailer, see the following: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-hS2CnCmjs

Impact: Cracked has been publicly performed 43 times and has been seen by approximately 5,000 people and is still touring Canada. Performance highlights include: keynote presentations at provincial, national and international conferences; the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference—the world’s largest gathering of Alzheimer disease researchers; inclusion through an adjudication process in the SpringWorks Indie Theatre and Arts Festival in Stratford, Ontario for three performances; performances at long-term care and retirement homes across Ontario; and 2 performances featured at the Ontario Science Centre as part of Brain Fest. Cracked has garnered media attention from television, radio, newspapers, and magazines, including interviews with the researchers in the Globe and Mail, Alzheimer Speaks in the US, and Zoomer Media.

1. RESEARCH STATEMENT

My transdisciplinary research program represents a convergence of several key interests: 1) stigma associated with dementia and other cognitive impairments (e.g. stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination) and the consequent social exclusion and marginalization found at both macro levels of political economy and culture, and the micro-level of embodied and embedded practices; 2) the development of a relational model of citizenship which integrates insights from the fields of embodiment and dementia, citizenship, and human rights to address issues of social justice and state responsibility regarding the recognition and entitlements of individuals living with dementia; and 3) the development, implementation, and evaluation of arts-based knowledge translation initiatives (e.g. research-based theatre, film) to bridge my research on relationality, embodiment, and selfhood, with the practice and ethics of dementia care. These interests represent two main themes: relational citizenship and knowledge translation.
