Current Appointments
2015 – present Associate Professor, Department of Otolaryngology – HNS, University of Toronto
2013
– present Adjunct Professor, Music, Faculty of
Music, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Faculty of Music In association with the Music and Health Research
Collaboratory (MaHRC)
2008
– present Department Chief, Otolaryngology-HNS,
University of Toronto, St. Michael’s Hospital,
The Department at St Michaels Hospital was in need of rejuvenation and new
vision when I assumed the leadership position in 2008. At that time, although budgetary constraints
were evident, the physical and equipment resources were outdated and no longer
meeting the needs of the patients or staff.
In the past 5 years, the ambulatory clinic has grown from 10,000 visits
to more than 20,000 visits a year and has recently undergone a $750,000 newly
redesigned/renovated space with state of the art endoscopy and upper
airway/laryngology equipment. Donor support was also very strong with more than
$250,000 donated for new equipment.
A recent successful External Department Review was carried out of my first 5
year term and reappointment was effective Dec 2014.
2004 – present Consultant, Canadian Opera Company, Canada
Expert voice care is provided on an urgent or elective basis for vocal performers (Canadians or visiting performers) in order to support vocal health and safety for this unique patient population.
2002
– present Consultant, Stratford Festival
Stratford Festival has requested access for urgent or elective voice care
for their performers on an as needed basis.
1998
– present Voice Clinic Medical Director, Voice
Disorders Clinic, St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, Canada
The Voice Disorders Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic based at St
Michaels Hospital since 1999. The
purpose is to diagnose and treat complex voice/laryngology disorders in
conjunction with a speech language pathologist and singing specialists. This
multidisciplinary clinic has a national reputation as a centre of excellence
for laryngology and provides multidisciplinary education for students (faculty
of medicine, music and speech pathology).

2010 – 2012 Courtesy Appointment, Otolaryngology-HNS, Mount Sinai Hospital
2008 – 2010 President Medical Staff Association, St Michaels Hospital, Canada
2008 – 2010 Executive Member Medical Advisory Committee, St Michaels Hospital, Canada
2006
– 2010 Board Member, Board of Directors, St Michaels
Hospital, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
As a voting member on the Board , this position allowed me to gain
considerable experience in a variety of management issues including strategic
planning, budget issues and delivery of primary / tertiary care in an inner
city academic institution.
2006 – 2008 Vice President Medical Staff Association, St Michaels Hospital
2004
– 2008 Co-Chair Alternate Funding Plan
Steering/Negotiating Committee, St Michaels Hospital
As Co-chair of the Steering Committee on AFP and Chair of the negotiating committee,
I was representing more than 300
academic physicians and surgeons in the development of the provincial alternate
funding plan for Ontario academic physicians.
Under my leadership on the negotiating committee, the St Michaels
Hospital Physicians Association in develop a completely original, independent
governance structure and devise a contract in conjunction with the Ontario
Medical Association, acceptable to all
stakeholders involved in this project (OMA, University of Toronto and St
Michaels Hospital Physicians Group). St Michael’s Hospital was the first
hospital to create a governance structure with more than the required 80% departments
agree in principle and the first to formally sign on to the new AFP contract in
the province.
This involved more than 200 hours a year in meetings with physicians groups, lawyers,
OMA and other provincial academic centre leaders.

In office endoscopic laser (KTP)
training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Voice Clinic in order
to move forward to bring this treatment to voice patients in Ontario. Since then, I have successfully lobbied the Ministry
of Health to approve this new treatment for patients and obtained funding to
obtain and operationalize the procedure for the St Michaels Voice Clinic
patients. Donor support was also very
strong, providing half the cost of the new equipment.
