C. Academic Profile

1. RESEARCH STATEMENT
The overall goal of my research program is to advance neurorehabilitation practice in order to improve gait and mobility outcomes for individuals living with neurological conditions and in particular, stroke. Specifically, my research program is comprised of two main themes: 1) characterizing the impact of neurological injury and 2) development of novel rehabilitation interventions. The first theme informs the second as the aim is to tailor interventions to specifically target deficits contributing to mobility limitations.

2. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Teaching in a health professional program, such as physiotherapy, presents three issues that I feel are important to recognize; first, the commitment to life-long learning; second, the development of clinical reasoning and practical clinical skills; and third, the clinical application of core science such as neurophysiology. I take a scholarly approach to teaching, whereby I look to the existing literature or conduct scientific investigations to determine best teaching practices. I use multiple approaches to address these important educational issues including authentic experience activities, flipped classrooms, class discussion and modelling behavior.

3. CREATIVE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES STATEMENT
My creative professional activity has focused on the use of dance in rehabilitation and teaching. I am investigating the effects of an adapted dance program on balance and psychosocial well-being as well as the potential underlying mechanisms of dance that lead to these benefits. Future work will focus on developing a training program and/or knowledge translation material to facilitate the implementation of adapted dance programs across the country. I am also investigating the use of dance as an instructional tool. Complex concepts about dynamic events such as the neurophysiology of the basal ganglia are often difficult to convey with static text and images. I am collaborating with achoreographer to develop a dance performance that I will narrate as an instructional tool for teaching neurophysiology to physiotherapy students. Future work will investigate the effectiveness of this approach compared to a traditional lecture.
